Chapter Ten
"The completed script for the audiobook will be emailed to you shortly," said Brad. "I gave it a cursory glance. Recording begins next week. They'll politely send you a photo of the recording artist, maybe a snippet of the first day's reading. Don't expect any updates beyond that point, however."
"I'll settle for being delighted with one email," I said. Did I sound sarcastic? If so, it was by accident, but Brad wouldn't realize that, probably. He'd think the city's metropolitan attitude was finally having some influence.
"Is that all? I think so." He gave his notes a cursory glance. "Now we come to the part I mentioned in my text. I've had a word with Sunshadow's chief editor, and we both feel it's best not to discuss a third project for the time being."
"I suppose it's better for me not to ask which one suggested it first," I said. This was not a joke. I wanted it to be, but something happened to it along the way.
"Neither of us," answered Brad, adjusting his glasses, which were still slightly slippy on the bridge of his nose â too narrow, I thought, to support them. "It's more of a suggestion. You realize it's the best move for everyone to take a step back. We don't want any conversations ending awkwardly, do we?"
Since that felt like nearly every conversation with my current editor, I could not comment. "I'm guessing the official word is, until sales improve, no further novels," I said. "Tell me if I'm somewhere in the neighborhood."
"Psychic," answered Brad, snottily. "So, we're clear, I gather? This will probably be our last official meeting for some time, until after Kaufton's assessment in the new year. That's generally when the executives, the editorial staff, and various influential voices discuss what direction to follow in the coming year. Probably then they'll decide if they want to discuss a future project with you."
"Not holding your breath, are you?" I asked, smiling.
Brad blinked. He smirked. "Very nice," he said. "I see what you did. Humor. If you'll excuse me, I'll laugh on the inside."
"Way to stroke a girl's ego," I said. From my bag, I counted out my part of our waitress's tip, as Brad gathered his electronic notebook and the script samples.
"If you're actually interested in broadening your attitude, you should come to the party I'm attending on Wednesday," said Brad.
"Another drinks party for a launch? No thanks," I said. If Arnold was not making me go, I intended to skip it this time.
"It's not a launch. It's a mixer that a friend of mine is hosting," said Brad. "It's more diversity than you're accustomed to socially, but it would be good for you. Think of it as an opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and meet some alternative professionals. "
"Such as?"
"Artists, writers, musicians. Critical thinkers on the cutting edge of the new literary wave â industry insiders and investors from the younger generation who will be taking over in the future," said Brad.
"That does sound very diverse," I answered, humoring him.
